Mais in kauwgum

Mijn eindexamenproject heeft als titel ‘Alles is Mais’. Inspiratie hiervoor is een onderzoek* waaruit blijkt dat steeds meer producten om ons heen mais bevatten. Ook in ons voedsel wordt steeds meer mais verwerkt, zodat we er ongemerkt veel van binnen krijgen. Voor sommige mensen is dat zoveel, dat hun koolstofvezels (en als mens ben je daaruit opgebouwd) voor 80 procent uit maiskoolstof bestaan, en die daardoor ziek worden en botafwijkingen kunnen krijgen. Met andere woorden: de mens vermaist. Ik wil mensen laten ontdekken in welke producten mais terug te vinden is en hoe afhankelijk we er van zijn geworden.

Ik heb dit verbeeld door de wereld van mais te laten zien in twee lagen. Een zichtbare voorkant met 32 illustraties over mais. Het verhaal achter mais heb ik er letterlijk achter geplaatst. Mais is voor ons allemaal bekend, maar waar mais precies in zit is een verborgen wereld. Bijna op geen enkele verpakking wordt het letterlijk vermeld en dat maakt het moeilijk om er achter te komen.

Door voor mijn project qr-codes om te bouwen tot illustraties heb ik deze twee lagen gecreerd. Ik heb een wand gemaakt met 32 scanbare illustraties over mais. Door middel van je smartphone kun je het verhaal achter mais ontdekken. Hiervoor download je Microsoft Tag (uit de app-store) op je smartphone en kun je met je eigen telefoon het verhaal ontdekken. Per code wordt in tekst en beeld of filmpje een stukje van het verhaal verteld. De 32 illustratie-codes vertellen samen het hele verhaal. Bezoekers kregen een boekje met alle codes mee om thuis op hun gemak nog eens te scannen.

Dat ik qr-codes om kon bouwen tot illustraties was voor mij een hele ontdekking. Het kwam eigenlijk voort uit de gedachte dat als mijn titel ‘alles is mais’ is, dat ik dat ook in mijn hele concept zou moeten doorvoeren, en dat alles ook mais zou moeten zijn. Dus ook de qr-codes die ik in wilde zetten. Zo ben ik stukje bij beetje aan de code gaan sleutelen en heb er de grenzen van opgezocht, net zolang tot il er maisafbeelingen van kon maken, die nog als code leesbaar waren. Ook in de beelden en de filmpjes die ik achter de code heb geplaatst, laat ik steeds de mais in die producten zien, door gebruik te maken van visuele, auditieve of typografische kenmerken van mais.

Het project is genomineerd voor de afdelingsprijs Grafisch Ontwerp van de KABK en voor de Academieprijs van de KABK.

Het ‘Alles is Mais’ project is nog een keer tentoongesteld op het festival Smaakexplosies in Zaandam.

Daarnaast is het project gepubliceerd in Items magazine, in haar special over de beste “Dutch design graduates van 2012′. En het is ook gepubliceerd in het Londense Arts Tread Magazine, in haar selectie van ’the best design graduates projects of 2012 worldwide’.

The title of my graduation project is ‘Everything is Corn’. Inspiration for this project is a study* that shows that corn is in nearly every product around us. Corn is processed more and more in our food. So without noticing we consume a lot of it. It even appears that there are people who exist for 80% of corn, and who can get ill or obtain bone deformities. In other words: corn gets in our bones. I want people to discover in which products corn is to be found and let them realize how dependent we have become of corn, especially now the harvest of it fails.

For my concept I wanted to show the world of corn in two layers. A visible one, with illustrations about corn and an invisible one with the amazing story literaly behind corn. We all know corn, but where it’s in is a hidden world. I liked to use this hidden layer, because on barely any packaging corn is listed, and that makes it hard to discover.

For my project I transformed qr-codes into illustrations, in which way I could create these two layers. I created a wall with 32 panels with scannable illustrations of corn. You can discover the hidden layer by using a smartphone. After downloading Microsoft Tag (from the app-store) on your smartphone, you are able to discover the story. Every illustration code shows a small part of the story by showing information and a series of pictures or an animation. Together the 32 illustrations tell the whole story. Visitors of the exhibition received a small booklet with all the codes, so they could scan them all at ease when they were home.

The fact that I could transform qr-codes into illustrations was quite a surprise for me. It arose from the thought that when my title is ‘everything is corn’, then the qr-codes that I wanted to use had to look like corn as well. So I started changing the code bit by bit, explored the boundaries of it, so far that the illustrations were still scannable. In the picture and animations behind the code, I tried to show the corn in products, by using the visual, auditory or typographic characteristics of corn.

The project was nominated for the Graphic Design department award of the KABK and for the KABK Academy award.

Besides that it was selected by the renowned ‘Items Magazine’ for her special ‘Best Dutch Design Graduates 2012’. And it was also published in Arts Thread Magazine (London), in her selection of worlds best graduation projects of 2012.

‘Everthing is Corn’ was exhibited at the graduation expo of the KABK and was exhibited at the festival ‘Smaakexplosies’ in Zaandam.
